Ingredients

  • 2 ripe avocados
  • 2 medium-sized tomatoes diced
  • 1 small red onion finely chopped
  • 1 small jalapeño pepper optional, for a bit of heat
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro chopped
  • 1 lime for both zest and juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil optional for added richness
  • Feel free to adjust these ingredients to your taste especially when it comes to the level of spiciness and lime juice.

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

  • Start by prepping all your ingredients. Dice the tomatoes and finely chop the red onion and cilantro. If you like a bit of heat, remove the seeds from the jalapeño pepper and finely chop it as well.

Step 2: Slice and Cube the Avocados

  • Cut the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh out into a bowl. Use a knife to slice the avocado into cubes, then gently mash them with a fork, leaving some chunks for texture.

Step 3: Combine All the Ingredients

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the diced tomatoes, avocado, red onion, jalapeño (if using), and chopped cilantro. Give everything a gentle mix to incorporate all the ingredients.

Step 4: Add Lime and Season

  • Zest the lime over the mixture for an extra punch of flavor, then squeeze the juice over the salsa. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir everything gently to combine and taste-test to see if it needs more lime juice or seasoning.

Step 5: Serve & Enjoy!

  • Serve your fresh avocado and tomato salsa with tortilla chips, as a topping for tacos, or alongside grilled chicken. It’s that simple! You can even serve it in small bowls for a party platter.

Tips for Perfecting Your Avocado & Tomato Salsa
Use Ripe Avocados: To ensure your salsa has that creamy texture, be sure to use ripe avocados. They should yield slightly to gentle pressure but not be mushy.
Make Ahead: This salsa is best served fresh, but if you need to make it ahead, you can prepare it up to 2 hours in advance. Keep it covered in the fridge to prevent the avocados from turning brown.
Adjust Heat Level: If you prefer a milder salsa, leave out the jalapeño, or you can substitute it with a mild bell pepper. For more heat, add an extra jalapeño or a dash of hot sauce.
Add Garlic: For a little extra depth of flavor, mince one clove of garlic and add it to the salsa. It pairs beautifully with the creamy avocado and juicy tomatoes.
